As a partner of the biggest initiative to universalize the primary education, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), we had the privilege to run 100 educational and 40-skill developmentcentres in the districts of Panipat and Hisar- reaching out to around four thousand children during the project period.
This project has given us a unique opportunity to emerge as the foremost NGO in the field of alternative education and skill development. It gave us an opportunity to understand the challenges of pedagogy, address the concerns of the most deprived and marginalized communities and create systems, procedures, human resource, controlling mechanism, processes of monitoring and evaluation and continuous development of staff to achieve the mission and goal of SSA in letter and spirit. In skill development centre, trades like sewing & cutting, embroidery, carpentry, electrician training, envelope making and book binding were taught to children to enable them to become self reliant and ensure a decent living.
The first and foremost part of the programme was to identify those clusters where the maximum numbers of dropout children as well as those who had never been to schools could be found. A house-to-house survey was carried out to identify such children. Once such children were identified a five-day intensive workshop was organized for all the teachers. This workshop was focused on how to conduct multi level classroom. As a part of this workshop, teachers were introduced and trained in innovative pedagogical tools like joyful learning, and learning by doing. During this workshop curriculum expert were invited to prepare a curriculum, ideal for dropout children which went a long way in carry out this project very successfully.
The end of this project witnessed mainstreaming of each and every student, a rare achievement in the field of education.
